2007 Gardens of the Year

Three great yards with three different concepts, and all will make you green with backyard envy.

In the past, 417 Home has honored that lush and colorful work of art: the garden. But this year we decided to expand our horizons and celebrate everything a backyard can be, whether that’s a garden, an outdoor living space or a DIY hybrid of them both. We have examples of all three in this issue, and all of them represent the needs and personalities of their owners. There’s Ian and Phyllis Donnelly’s secret stroll garden, which is a labor of love and creative manifestations of hard work. It’s a garden through and through. Mark Hardman and Lenard Davenport have a beautifully manicured backyard that also has a pool and plenty of room for throwing a garden party. It falls somewhere in between the Donnelly’s garden and our third backyard: A pool area with outdoor kitchen and fire pit that’s a true extension of the rest of the home and an ideal place to gather as a family. These three backyards help us go a few steps beyond just focusing on gardening. Because your backyard can be whatever you want it to be. It is yours after all. Transform it, and use these beautiful examples as inspiration.
