For five decades, Maschino's Home Express has been Springfield's premier source for casual living furniture, both for the patio and sunroom. Its history in the same location dates back to 1952, when Maschino’s Hardware opened at 1715 S. Campbell in the Wedgewood Shopping Center. E.J. Maschino and his wife, Leola, started the extension of the family business, building on the Maschino family name in hardware begun with the establishment of Schaeffer-Maschino Hardware on Commercial Street in 1903 by George Maschino (E.J. Maschino’s father) and his partner. They expanded to 410 S. Campbell in 1913. After George Maschino’s death in 1931, the store was sold. However, a hardware store continued to be the dream of E.J. Maschino. After his marriage and 16 years as a salesperson for Coleman Lamp and Stove Company, his dream of his own store was realized. The original Maschino’s Hardware opened in a building, which would be the first of what would grow to be four, connected buildings housing Maschino’s Home Expressions. Mr. Maschino passed away in 1972. At that time the Maschino’s daughter, Nancy, her mother, and Gary Brown assumed full management. In 1974 an additional 10,000 sq. ft. of sales floor allowed expansion in patio furniture, fireplace accessories, housewares, and gifts. In 1982, the purchase of an additional 5,000 sq. ft. allowed a larger furniture display area. Early in 1987 the hardware and basic housewares business was sold to Glen Block True Value Hardware. The character of Maschino’s product expanded into casual, as well as patio, furniture, fireplace accessories, gifts, and registry items. Today, Maschino’s takes its place as a regional store specializing in casual furnishings for the home, including indoor casual dining and counter/bar stools, rattan and weicker seating/dining sets. In 2003, Maschino’s celebrated 100 years of business in Springfield, beginning the second century of Maschino’s in Springfield.
