Detoxifying & Hydrating Wraps
The Spa Chateau at the Chateau on the Lake offers three different body wraps that detoxify and hydrate the skin. In the Detox Wrap ($65), the body is dry brushed, then a light layer of a detox oil is applied before you are put into a King Tut-worthy cocoon wrap for 20 or 30 minutes. The dry exfoliation helps remove impurities and dead surface skin cells. The Desert Heat Hydrating Wrap ($75) is done with a product that warms up when applied. The Moroccan Rassoul Wrap ($150) also begins with an exfoliation of the skin, which is followed by a clay mud application. The clay gives the skin a cooling sensation before you are wrapped up. The Rassoul treatment re-mineralizes the skin and increases circulation. “It’s like vitamins for the skin,” says Kathleen Fuller, spa director at Spa Chateau.A variety of elements including aloe, lady slipper, chickweed, papaya, kelp and hawthorn berry are used to detoxify, de-stress and rejuvenate the body in the 90-minute Herbal Body Wrap ($80) at Aundria Spa, according to Owner/Manager Sharon Mellers.
At Spa Valencia, plan to take about 75 minutes for the Warm Algae Wrap ($95), which starts off with 10 minutes in a private Jacuzzi. Then, your body is wrapped in protein-enriched sea algae, which detoxifies and re-mineralizes the skin. You then move to a private shower room where you are wrapped in plastic and towels to warm the skin and make it more absorbent. Kim Manley, a licensed massage therapist at Spa Valencia, says the treatment helps with circulation and to keep cells purified, so they are more absorbent of nutrients later. If you choose the 90-minute Dead Sea Mud Mask ($125), you’ll experience a scalp and foot massage while cocooned in warm mud. Manley says the mud exfoliates the skin, pulling out toxins and adding minerals and nutrients that contribute to softness. Both treatments finish with a moisturizing massage.
At Grove Spa, the Aroma-Algae Wrap ($65) involves 60 minutes of detoxification. Milk and honey products are used to soothe and calm the body, which feels great after being sunburned, according to esthetician Tammy Alexander.
According to its website, the Clip Joint Salon & Day Spa’s Seaweed Full Body Wrap ($60) uses the antioxidant properties of seaweed to detoxify, tone, and tighten the skin. They also have a Desert Heat Wrap ($70) that involves self-heating bubbly wrap, which is rich in vitamins and leaves the skin mineralized, shiny, and smooth. The unique Green Coffee Wrap ($80) uses just that, green coffee, to tone and eliminate toxins.
Esthetiques’ Peppermint Seaweed Wrap ($70) lasts about an hour and uses seaweed and peppermint oil to detoxify and re-mineralize the skin, while promising better circulation. According to Manager Haden Long, the peppermint wrap is great for toning the skin. The Ultimate Body Glow ($85) begins with an all-over body exfoliation, followed by a terra vital mud mask. The rich desert mud hydrates the skin while you are wrapped in cellophane. The process helps the skin to release toxins through sweat.
Slimming Wraps
Some wraps are entirely aimed at achieving that lighter feeling and getting spa-goers ready for swimsuit season or a big event. At the Chateau Spa, the Slim and Tone Wrap ($150) should be done in a series to tighten the skin. This treatment also uses a green coffee concentrate, which flushes out toxins naturally and prevents water retention. At Esthetiques, they have recently begun offering a Contour Body Wrap ($110), which claimes to provide a long-term change to the appearance of your skin. The 90-minute treatment begins with a full-body exfoliation, followed by a wrap in cellophane. Then, a stimulating body mask is applied before a reduction cream is massaged into cellulite problem areas. According to Long, this wrap can help you to look better in that dress that you love in as soon as a week. “If you do a series of three in a week, by the weekend your dress will fit differently,” she says. The exotically named Parafango Wrap at Esthetiques can be done in a target area, below the breast and to the knees in an hour ($70), or a full body treatment in 90 minutes ($110). Paraffin wax and natural sea mud are used to firm and tone the skin, reduce the appearance of cellulite and even trim off inches. “It helps your pants fit better,” Long says. If the Parafango is done in a series and paired with diet and exercise, Long says you will see the best results. At Grove Spa, Alexander says the Slender Quest Wrap & Body Mask ($70-$85) is their most popular choice. On top of detoxifying the body, the treatment also offers some inch loss by compressing the tissue and firming the skin. You are first sprayed down with an amino acid solution, and then a layer of therapeutic sea clay is applied to condition the skin and stimulate circulation. Finally, you are wrapped in a foil blanket and other coverings as warmth helps the body to absorb.
No matter what you decide to wrap your body in, Kim Manley of Spa Valencia sees the use of natural elements as a way to override the harmful substances that are a part of most people’s daily routine. With each choice that adds toxins to our bodies, organic elements like mud, clay, and seaweed that date back to Ancient beauty regimens, help to cleanse your outside as you relax your inside.
