Health care is ever more expensive, adding pressure to intimate decisions. There is a sea of options. Some are constrained by health-insurance plans. Some are bewildering; consider the host of physicians offering elective procedures. Making choices is not easy. As a group, physicians are poised to be taciturn: The ethics of patient confidentiality and the privacy regulations created by the federal Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act teach them to be tight-lipped. Where do patients turn for information? 417 Magazine's Top Doctors list is one place. The premise? Simple. We survey as many physicians as possible in southwest Missouri. We ask whom they'd trust with caring for themselves-or their loved ones-and they fill in the names. The resulting list, printed here, isn't a definitive bible; it's a starting point.
